class="ez-toc-section-end">

A cannabis social club, also known as a cannabis association, is an organization made up of adults who choose to come together to consume cannabis privately, using products from a known source and without resorting to the illicit market. The starting point is that in Spain, private consumption by an adult is not a crime. The association creates a private space where such consumption takes place according to established rules, with controlled access, and away from the street.

It’s just as important to know what a club isn’t. It doesn’t have a storefront, it doesn’t serve just anyone who walks in, and it doesn’t operate like a business. In Spain, the sale of cannabis is a crime (Article 368 of the Penal Code), and there are no establishments authorized to sell it. That is why the entire model revolves around one key figure: the member.

How a Club Works Behind the Scenes

The association

Formally, the club is a nonprofit association with bylaws, governing bodies, and a membership registry. Anyone who joins becomes part of that group and agrees to abide by its rules. There is no state law regulating these clubs; they operate within a framework that has been defined by the courts. Catalonia passed Law 13/2017, but the Constitutional Court struck it down in 2018. In Barcelona, the City Council also regulates where these clubs can be located through a municipal zoning plan. If you’d like more details, we explain it in our guide on the Cannabis Regulations in Barcelona.

Shared Farming

The cannabis consumed at the club comes from a collective cultivation project designed to meet the members’ own consumption needs. That is the fundamental difference from a retail outlet: it is not produced for the general public, but for a closed group of identified individuals who are part of the association.

Dining in

Consumption takes place within the association’s private premises. Members agree not to remove cannabis from the club, because outside that private space, different rules apply: consuming or carrying cannabis in public is a serious offense under Organic Law 4/2015.

Rules for Living Together

Every association has its own bylaws, but there are rules that are common to almost all of them:

Exclusive access for members, who must verify their identity at each visit.

It is prohibited to remove cannabis from the premises.

Minors are prohibited from entering, with no exceptions.

Responsible consumption: The team may advise against or limit consumption when it deems necessary.

Respect for the neighborhood: no gathering in groups or drinking at the door.

Step-by-Step Guide to Becoming a Member

The exact requirements vary by association, but the general outline is as follows:

Requirement

What does this entail?

Why is this requested?

Legal Age

Be at least 18 years old; some clubs require you to be 21

Clubs are associations of adults

Identification Card

Valid national ID card, foreign resident ID card, or passport

Verify the age and identity of each member

Endorsement or invitation

Another member introduces you, in accordance with each association's rules

Maintain the club's exclusive and private nature

Being a Consumer

The association brings together adults who already use cannabis

The club is not looking to attract new customers

Accept the Terms and Conditions

Commit to using cannabis at home and not taking it out

Preventing consumption from extending beyond the private sphere

In practice, the process usually follows this order:

Make sure you meet the minimum age requirement for the club you're interested in.

You must obtain a recommendation or invitation from a member, as determined by the association.

Bring your valid ID to the location.

The team explains the rules to you, and if you agree, you accept them and complete the registration process.

From that point on, you'll have member access and will need to log in each time you visit.

How to Choose a Cannabis Club in Barcelona

There are many organizations in Barcelona, and not all of them operate the same way. These criteria will help you distinguish a reputable club from one that isn't:

Let them ask for the requirements. If a venue lets you in without asking for ID, a guarantor, or verifying your age, be wary. Access control is a sign of professionalism, not a nuisance.

They should explain the rules before discharge. You should know what you can and cannot do before agreeing to anything.

They shouldn't promise the impossible. No one can offer you immediate access without any requirements or let you take cannabis home. Anyone who promises this is putting you at risk.

Don't let them catch you on the street. People who approach tourists on the street to invite them to a club are not a legitimate business.

Location and hours. A club near where you live or are staying, with good transportation access and hours that fit your schedule, means you won't have to cross town.

A specific example: BCN Kush in Sants

At BCN Kush, we apply this same model in the Sants neighborhood. We’re located at Carrer de Galileu, 124 (08028), near Sants Station, and are easily accessible by metro from Plaça de Sants (L1 and L5), Badal (L5), or Plaça del Centre (L3).
