Can you bring marijuana on the train? Renfe, Rodalies, and the metro

Cannabis associations in Barcelona

If you're planning to travel around Barcelona or Spain by train, it's normal to wonder if you can carry marijuana with you. The short answer is no: Trains, subways, and stations are public spaces, and the law is clear. We'll explain what it says and what the risks are.

What the Law Says

The Organic Law 4/2015 on Public Safety prohibits the use or possession of drugs in public places, in public establishments, and in the public transportation. Trains, subways, buses, and their stations fall squarely into that category.

  • It is a serious violation, with fines that starting at 601 euros.
  • The substance is removed.
  • It is illegal to both consume it and simply carry it, even if it is a small amount and intended for personal use.

AVE, long-distance trains, Rodalies, and the subway

The rule is the same everywhere: high-speed trains, commuter trains, Rodalies, the subway, or the tram. In addition, smoking—including cigarettes—is prohibited on trains, in the subway, and in covered stations.

Checks at stations

At large stations, such as Barcelona Sants, there is a regular police presence and, at times, K-9 units. On high-speed and long-distance trains, luggage is scanned before passengers are allowed onto the platform.

Train Travel to Other Countries

If the route crosses a border, the risk is greater. Transporting cannabis from one country to another can result in criminal charges, and each country enforces its own laws.

Tips

  • Do not travel with cannabis or any traces of it on grinders, rolling papers, or clothing.
  • If you've been drinking, it's totally fine to take the train, but be careful not to fall asleep and miss your stop.
  • Never use drugs in the train restroom or on the platform: in addition to a fine, you could set off the smoke detectors.

Frequently Asked Questions

What if it's CBD?

CBD is in a gray area. Products containing traces of THC can cause problems during a security check, so it's best not to carry them on public transportation.

Can I take the train to the club?

Yes, of course: what you can't do is carry cannabis with you on the way there or back. At a cannabis club, consumption always takes place on the premises.
