Types of cannabis: indica, sativa and hybrids

It is a great time to be a cannabis user in Barcelona. With the decriminalization of weed in Spain, and the creation of cannabis clubs and dispensaries in Barcelona where people can get and consume marijuana legally, one could say that cannabis accessibility is at an all time high (pun intended).

But with the complexity and variety of options on the menu some people may get confused with certain terms or not be sure completely of what the differences are. So today we are going to explore what is cannabis and what are the different types of cannabis.

What is cannabis?

Cannabis is the word used to refer to a family of plants called cannabaceae, or hemp. There are three main types of cannabis: Indica, Sativa, and Hybrid. Each strain has its unique properties that make it suitable for different purposes, so which one you choose to consume will depend on what type of effect or experience you are looking for.

Indicates

Indica is a type of cannabis that is known for its relaxing and calming effects and typically has lower levels of THC and higher levels of CBD, the non-psychoactive compound that has been shown to have numerous health benefits. That is why these types of strains are medically used for pain relief, to treat anxiety, insomnia, and achieve relaxation. Because they have a sedative effect that can difficult our concentration, it is an ideal strain for nighttime use or a laid back activity that doesn't require brainpower. It is good for chilling at home, lying on the couch while watching a movie or even to consume before sleep. Some popular Indica strains include Northern Lights, Granddaddy Purple and Afghan Kush.

Sativa

Sativa is a type of cannabis that is known for its energizing and uplifting effects because they typically have higher levels of THC, the psychoactive compound that causes the "high" associated with cannabis use. It is medically used to treat depression, anxiety, and ADHD because they have that stimulating effect that can help increase creativity and focus. It goes well with more social activities since it makes you laugh and engage more in conversation, while also making you feel mentally sharp and less inhibited. Some popular Sativa strains include Jack Herer, Sour Diesel, and Durban Poison.

Hybrid

Hybrid strains are a combination of Indica and Sativa strains, resulting in a unique blend of characteristics from both types. Hybrid strains can be Indica-dominant, Sativa-dominant, or balanced. The effects of hybrid strains can vary widely depending on the specific strain and the individual's tolerance but in general they are made to seek a combined effect of the best of each without ranging into the extremes. Typically, most strains that exist nowadays and that you can find in dispensaries are some type of hybrid leaning towards one way or another; this is because after so many years of cultivation and breeding the genetics of the strains have been crossed too many times. This is not necessarily a bad thing since the breeding process is deliberate and calculated, but it is true that finding pure sativas or indicas is rare nowadays.

There's a lid for every pot

In conclusion, the diversity of strains that exist today make it easier for us to find the right blend for what we need. Whereas you are looking to come back from work and disconnect completely from the world while you watch The Office, or you want a night out with friends, or to go to a rock concert, or even just sit down at a cafe and write your novel, there is a perfect strain out there for you. Make sure to check the menus of the dispensaries and ask for the percentage of each blend next time you visit your cannabis club.
